- It is estimated that approximately 2 in every 100 people
will develop some kind of eating disorder at some time in
their lives
- Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any
mental illness.
- It is reported that 5-10% of anorexics die within 10 years
after contracting the disease; 18-20% of anorexics will
be dead after 20 years.
- 90% of individuals diagnosed with eating disorders are
female although the number of men who are being diagnosed
with eating disorders is increasing.
- 20% of all people with anorexia die from problems directly
related to their illness
- An estimated 3.7 percent of women suffer from anorexia
nervosa in their lifetime. An estimated 4.2 percent of women
have bulimia nervosa in their lifetime.
- Some researchers believe that BED is the most common eating
disorder, current findings suggest that BED affects 4% of
the general population but this is largely considered to
be a vast underestimation.
- Anorexia Nervosa has an average age of onset between 14
and 18 years whereas Bulimia Nervosa usually begins in late
adolescence or early adult life
- Research suggests that about 1 percent of female adolescents
have anorexia.
- About 50 percent of people who have had anorexia develop
bulimia or bulimic patterns.
- Approximately one-third of bulimic patients regularly
engage in shoplifting
- One-fourth of bulimic patients have suffered from alcohol
abuse or addiction at some point in their lives.
- Only 1 in 10 people with eating disorders receive treatment
- Long-term follow-up shows recovery rates ranging from
44 to 76% with prolonged recovery time for anorexia nervosa.
Short-term success in patients with bulimia nervosa is 50
to 70%, with relapse rates between 30 and 50% after 6 months.
Indications are good for recovery from both BED and CO once
the sufferer engages in treatment.
